Updated Local Authorities Election Act
The Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) governs municipal and school division elections in Alberta. It sets out rules and regulations for candidates, donors, electors, and election administrators that must be followed before, during and after an election.
Note that the LAEA was updated on September 1, 2020 and includes amendments related to:
- Nomination period
- Contributions to campaigns
All candidates are encouraged to develop a working understanding of the Local Authorities Election Act.
It is recommended that candidates seek legal advice, where possible, regarding their obligations.

If you wish to run for Councillor you must complete the nomination process. This means completing the required forms and collecting signatures from residents. You can complete this process during the nomination period.
The period of time (January 1 – December 31 of an election year) in which candidates may raise funds for their election campaigns. Candidates may only raise up to $5,000 per year in total outside this period.
Advance Voting Opportunities
Electors can cast a ballot in the 2021 Municipal Election before Election Day. This is called an advance vote.
More information on advance voting location and the advance voting date will be made available in 2021.
Campaign Disclosure Statement Deadline
All candidates in the 2021 Municipal Elections must report the total contributions they received and their campaign expenses by March 1, 2022. The form used to provide this information is called the Campaign Disclosure Statement.
